Menopause through the lens of Chinese Medicine

Shedding Light on Menopause: as viewed in Chinese Medicine

Menopause in Western culture can seem like the drop off into the ocean – down to dark depths that often creates fear and resistance within women, but it doesn’t have to be this way.

Please join us for a presentation explaining how menopause is viewed in Chinese medical theory. We will be discussing the basic theory of the 7-year life cycles/stages of development for females, as well as a basic understanding of the functioning of the menstrual cycle and how the shift from menstruating to no longer menstruating takes place within the context of Chinese medicine.

All the symptoms of menopause that we begrudgingly accept as normal and inevitable in Western medicine are actually seen as signs of pathology in Chinese medicine and not necessary in a balanced system. We will explore steps we can take to prepare for the release from the menstrual cycle so as not to deal with these symptoms, or to help lessen them. We will also discuss what we can do even if we are already going through these changes.

Most importantly we will look at what we gain by no longer menstruating, in both the physical and spiritual realms, from within the view of Chinese medical theory.

We will be discussing a topic of women’s health that is too often over looked or dreaded, and how we can claim more autonomy over our bodies by knowing them in a brand new light.

Marielle Ceresa is a licensed acupuncturist and massage therapist (NH & NY) who recently relocated to Dover from New York City.

She uses her diverse education and experience to treat a wide range of conditions including but not limited to pain and injury, neurological issues, respiratory complaints, fertility and gynecological disorders, women’s health, digestive disorders including IBS, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s as well as mood imbalance issues including anxiety and depression.

In her sessions she integrates acupuncture with medical qi gong, essential oils, gua sha, cupping, and/or massage depending on the needs and presentation of the patient.

One of her passions is women’s health and shedding light on the patriarchal dominance in health care, and how practitioners and patients can help restore the balance by spreading awareness.

Our Child Welcoming Policy

Part of Avalon North’s mission is to work against age division. A subset of that is our wish to engage mothers with children in tow, as we feel much of American society prefers mothers with children to stay at home or confine themselves to the Mcdonald's ball pit. We will actively fight against this compartmentalization of motherhood.

In addition to our kid-centered events programming

Our Child Welcoming Policy is as follows:

Infants always welcome at all times without exception.

Mildly to Extremely well-behaved Children of all genders under 18 are welcome at all events, (unless otherwise noted in the case of certain adult topics or for some open hours and events where mothers and the rest of us, may enjoy a break from all children including our own)

If your child walks a fine line between badly and mildly well behaved (as they all have at certain points in their lives, feel free to come and try, and if you have to take the little darling home, there will be no judgment and you will be reimbursed the cost of your admittance)

If the event is not geared specifically for children, please be aware that this is an adult women’s club and adults will be speaking freely and sometimes swears happen. We welcome and adore children, but we do not give them thrones

Children under 14 are free with an adult ticket
